“The Book of Methods: A New Vision of Burroughs, Collaboration, and Cut-up/Conceptual culture”

William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin’s out-of-print cut-up manifesto, The Third Mind, first published in English in 1978, actually began its life much earlier. The work began with an earlier series of collaborations between Burroughs and Gysin, and started with the “discovery” of the cut-ups in 1959 that initiated the methodological foci of this practice. While setting origin dates is always dangerous, the entire period from 1959-1978 produced texts and images that would come to characterize the greater project of The Third Mind, as well as Burroughs’ larger literary projects.

Starting with Burroughs’ work, this master class focuses on cut-ups and collage in contemporary practice with attention to its long history, as well as to related topics including visual texts, sampling and sound, copyright and plagiarism, randomness vs. composition, avant-garde links to cultural production, new media and social networks, and crowd-sourcing. The workshop will express Burroughsian collage practice through various tensions inherent in the technique, as well as through Schneiderman’s experimental and conceptual creative works.
