Migration, climate crisis, Brexit, Aleppo, terror, Trump. What to do? What can we do? Are we feeling powerless, paralyzed?
“Compassion is an unstable emotion. It needs to be translated into action, or it withers. The question of what to do with the feelings that have been aroused, the knowledge that has been communicated. If one feels that there is nothing ‘we’ can do — but who is that ‘we’? — and nothing ‘they’ can do either — and who are ‘they’ — then one starts to get bored, cynical, apathetic.”
Does
a feeling of powerlessness turn into apathy or activism? And is the
function of poetry to assess the apathy - or is it a call to activistic
intervention? Does poetry have a function? This year, REVERSE will
present poets and artists that work in the tension between apathy and
activism, between pathos and politics, and between past and identity -
as well as artistic communities that work to mobilize collective action.
The theme for REVERSE 2017 is "Don't mourn - organize".
